About Jadavpur University
Jadavpur University is a State University in the state of West Bengal and is one of the foremost Universities in India. Noted for the technical education that it imparts through its faculty of engineering and technology (FET), it also has a vibrant science and humanities department which encompasses a wide range of subjects.
Jadavpur University has a rich history as its predecessor – National Council of Education, which was established in 1906 as the first nationalist university in protest against British hegemony over education. In 1905 the movement against partition of Bengal culminated into wide spread protests, esp. by intellectuals. Rabindranath Tagore, Aurabindo Ghosh, Raja Subodh Chandra Mullick. On 16 November the Landholders Society organized a meeting at Park Street, attended by 1500 delegates, among whom were eminent men of the time. The idea of the National Council of Education was mooted here. In a meeting held on 9 November 1905 at the Field and Academic Club, Subodh Chandra Mullick pledged Rupees one lakh for the foundation of a National University in Bengal. On 1 June 1906, the council was registered and on the 11 March 1922 the foundation stone of Sri Aurobindo Bhavan at the present Jadavpur University campus was laid. NCE was set up with Rash Behari Ghosh as its first president. The Calcutta Municipal Corporation under the leadership of its patriotic Mayor, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das leased the present site of the Jadavpur University campus of N.C.E. where its engineering college was shifted in 1924 under the name of College of Engineering and Technology. Aurobindo Ghosh was the founder Principal and its founder father and teachers included Rabindranath Tagore, Sir Goorudas Banerjee, Ananda Coomarswamy, Surendranath Banerjee, Ramendra Sunder Trivedi, Radha Kumud Mukherjee, Benoy Kumar Sarkar, Sakharam Ganesh Deoskar, Raja Subodh Mullick, Rash Behari Ghosh and Acharya Prafulya Chandra Roy, the famous professor of Chemistry and a visionary entrepreneur (founded Bengal Chemical).
By 1940, the institute was virtually functioning as an independent university, and after Indian Independence in 1947, the West Bengal State Legislature, with the concurrence of the Government of India, enacted the Jadavpur University Act, 1955 to convert the institute into Jadavpur University with full autonomy on (December 24, 1955). Since then the university has observed this date in its calendar as Convocation Day (source: Wikipedia). The blossoming of NCE into Jadavpur University was an achievement made possible by two great souls – Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then chief minister of Bengal, and Dr. Tirguna Sen, erstwhile education minister of Government of India.
Jadavpur University, thus established is primarily a Unitary University with only two affiliated colleges, i.e. Smt. About Jadavpur University Alumni Association Hyderabad
Jadavpur University has today established itself as an internationally acclaimed university committed towards advanced study and research. It offers a vast repertoire of transformational courses, employs the best minds in its faculty and produces some of the greatest talent that propel organizations in and beyond India. It was the result of the efforts of these accomplished individuals that the Alumni Association in Hyderabad was born in the mid 1970s. The aim of the organization – to ensure that the knowledge, character and relations developed within the ramparts of one of the most respected colleges in the country do not fade away amid the monotony of everyday life.
The family of members in the group kindled the Jadavpur spirit through regular social gatherings. However it was in 1977 that this spark was first carried out to the community at large. The states of Andhra Pradesh & West Bengal were ravaged by severe floods and many were rendered homeless. The Hyderabad JU alumni association which was formed a few years ago by some young JU educated professionals from BHEL, IDPL and ECIL, rose gallantly to the need of the hour and organized a fund raiser through a musical night by the renowned singer Mr. Manna Dey. Donations poured in; the contribution of the association to the Chief Minister's relief fund not only helped provide for the many flood affected families but also equipped the alumni with a mission – to serve and help the needy. A similar event organized with Pandit Ravi Shanker assisted in fostering this objective further. Unfortunately the rigors of professional life became crucial and the activities of the association were jeopardized due to the transfer of key office bearers.
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. The flame ignited by the initial members of the association endured within later alumni who came into the city and revived the organization with fresh vigor. The executive body formed was more homogeneous with participation from both general and technical disciplines of the university. More frequent and consequential programs were executed by the group as can be seen from the list below. The association has been registered in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana and the link with the parent body are established. The memoranda and the rules and regulations have been derived in accordance with those followed by the parent body with minor local variations. Most of the office bearers are renowned technocrats with national recognition in defense and public/private sectors. Under the able guidance of our President, Secretary and the Executive Committee, we hope to carry forward the mission to contribute our bit to the academic and cultural community.
