It gives me great pleasure to learn that the Hyderabad Chapter of the Jadavpur University Alumni Association is organizing the 4th Science Symposium for the school students followed by an Interschool Quiz on 27th July, 2013.
India, post independence has emerged as a global player in science and technology, courageously treading along the trends of cutting edge modern research. Participating in what has been aptly termed the fourth paradigm of scientific research, Indian researchers are posed to identify global challenges and offer viable solutions for the same in cyberspace. In this scenario we can envision a glorious future for developed India, build on the robust foundation of science and technology. The huge impact science has on shaping the future of this nation gives a major impetus to accelerate scientific research. India is blessed with huge young talent pool, and harnessing this untapped potential is the sure way forward to achieving the vision for the new millennium. It is indeed the need of the hour to inculcate scientific temperament in the mind of the youngsters, nature the quality of scientific aptitude and encourage them to pursue higher studies and careers in science.
In this context, I appreciate the decision of the Hyderabad Chapter of the Jadavpur University Alumni Association to conduct this annual Science Symposium along with an interschool Quiz. Needless to say, this will prove to be a wonderful platform for exchange of ideas, knowledge and innovative thought sharing. I am certain that the lectures by the invited scientists will inspire the younger generation. It is indeed a marvelous opportunity to expand our intellectual horizons and prepare the future generation for the cutting edge research.
I wish the organizers and participants of this programme all success and congratulate the organizers on this timely initiative.

Message for Symposium 2013
On the occasion of the fourth Science Symposium for school children, being organized by Jadavpur University Alumni Association, I fell extremely happy to felicitate the organizers for continuing this interactive program with the youngsters, which they started three years ago.
We need more events of this nature that can awaken a passion and interest in youngsters for pursuing science. The lectures by eminent scientists on contemporary areas of scientific research will give them a peep into the world of scientific research and a curiosity to know more. I hope similar interactive activities with the youngsters on relevant topics of science can be conducted at different centres in the country.
I Was impressed with the significance of topics chosen for the quiz. Be it conservation of water, or carbon foot print, Mars expedition or antibiotic resistance, there can be no doubt that the students will be competing to answer questions of immediate relevance in today's world.
I convey my best wishes to the participating students and the organizers and hope that their endeavour continues to enthuse the youngsters in building the scientific spirit in the years to come.
I wish the symposium all success.

MESSAGE
First of all, I would like to congratulate the Jadavpur University Alumni, Hyderabad Chapter for organizing the annual science meet for the benefit of the young students of Andhra Pradesh. Mentoring young minds, who form the future of any nation, is, in my opinion, the noblest service which the alumni/intellectuals of yesteryears can render to the society. On this occasion, I take the opportunity to share a few thoughts with the students participating in the science symposium:
Science today touches every aspect of our world and scientific research brings about development not just in the subject, but the entire universe, as we know it. Look at the world around you, and in everything you will find the touch of science. From our increasing understanding of the causes of diseases, to finding appropriate cures and preventions, newer tools and techniques to imaginative therapeutic breakthroughs (assisted reproduction, stem cells, genetic engineering) - research in the sector- has made the world a safer, better place to live in-leading to longer, and healthier lives. Agriculture has become more efficient and productive. So have the industries. New technologies and scientific findings have not only improved production but have also brought about endless new opportunities. Transport, communication, education- you name an area and you can easily see the effect science has had on it. And more than anything else- it has expanded our knowledge of the universe. From life on Earth, to exploration of other galaxies- scientific research doesn't just provide answers to our questions, but also, more importantly, bring forth new questions.
Thus science today forms the basis of most of our world. And so development and new findings in science don't just improve a single subject but the entire world, and how we treat it.
Ask yourself. Are you curious about questions you don't know answers to? Do you like imagining solutions- creating scenarios no one had thought of? Are you passionate about how the world works, about bringing a change in the world? If you have answered yes to those questions- you can be a good scientist! Of course it entails perseverance and hard work too-but that's true for any successful career isn't it?
I fondly hope that the symposium will motivate students to dream and strive to achieve the same, and more by exploring unchartered territories, developing new techniques and solutions, innovating, and most importantly asking the right questions through the pursuit of science as a career.
With best wishes to all-organizers, participants schools and students.

It gives me an immense pleasure to know that the Hyderabad Chapter of the Jadavpur University Alumni Association is going to organize the 4th Science Symposium on 27th July, 2013.
I feel privileged to recall that while working at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR), Hydearbad, I was closely associated with this endeavor and was honored to get the opportunity to speak in front of a gathering of enthusiastic and keenly interested school children from the twin cities in the first symposium held on 29th August 2009. It was indeed a great experience introducing interdisciplinary research area to them and answering their thoughtful questions after the lecture and also having an idea of their versatile knowledge during the science quiz program. It was an opportunity which we hardly get in our day to day research activities.
Science education and popularization are of immense importance to fight against superstition and blind faith in the society. This kind of symposium, aimed at enriching the knowledge of school children, is definitely a significant move to encourage them to choose science research for their future career. It also helps inculcate scientific outlook in the mind of the next generation. This was the dream of the great philosopher Swami Vivekananda, who paid immense importance to scientific and rational outlook in building a successful nation. country during this year. Thus the 4th symposium is a befitting tribute to him during his 150th birth anniversary, celebrated all over the country during this year.
There is absolutely no doubt that the Jadavpur University Alumni Association (Hyderabad) from the first symposium is striving to attain this goal and is successfully continuing to reach that. I hope the 4th symposium also will be helpful not only to the school children but also to the other participants.
I wish the symposium all success.
