The Legends of India’s Space Programme

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai (1919-1971), renowned physicist, Astronomer is considered the Father of India’s Space Programme. Dr. Sarabhai envisioned atmospheric research by launching sounding rockets. Heinitiated establishment of Indian National Committee for Space Research in 1962, later renamed ISRO.


 

Dr Satish Dhawan (1920-2002), mathematician and aerospace scientist, is considered the father of experimental fluid dynamics in India. He built ISRO as its Chairman from 1972 to 1984, concurrently holding the post of Director IISc.


Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), an aerospace scientist and statesman, was the first Project Director of India’s space mission. India’s space journey was initiated with the SLV-3 under his leadership. Dr. Kalam joined DRDO in 1982 and headed the organization from 1992 to 1999.

Top Ten Inventions in Recent Times

  1. Google’s Willow: a breakthrough in Quantum Computing Chip : A benchmark computing problem that may take a current classical computer billions of years to solve, Google’s 105–qubit Willow quantum processor solved it in 5 minutes!!! - achieving error rates “below threshold”.
  2. Chang’e-6 returns Moon Sample from the far side: China’s Chang’e-6 mission successfully collected and returned 1.935 Kg of rock from the Moon’s far side, South Pole Aitken (SPA) Basin, marking the first-ever lunar sample, supposed to be 2.8 billion years old, offering new insight into early lunar geology.
  3. Perovskite – silicon tandem cells reach 28.6 % efficiency: Hanwha Qcell achieved a world record 28.6% conversion efficiency for large-scale tandem solar cells combining silicon and perovskite – a significant step towards smaller, more cost-efficient solar installations. Perovskite is a crystal structure metal-halide compound that acts as a light-absorbing layer. Perovskite is available as a mineral in the USA, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, and Brazil.
  4. First commercial-scale solar farm in space tested: In 2023 - 2024 Caltech demonstrated the feasibility of collecting solar energy in orbit and beaming it back to Earth- paving the way for space-based power generation. The mission was named Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1) and the experiment was called Microwave Array for Power- transfer Low-orbit Experiment (MAPLE).
  5. AI – High Performance Computing (HPC) pipeline discovers new solid electrolyte: Demonstrating the combined power of AI and cloud-based HPC, researchers have screened over 32 billion candidates and identified new Na-Li-Y-Cl solid electrolytes suitable for next-generation batteries. Eighteen promising materials were validated experimentally in less than 80 hours.
  6. First 3-D printed functional human brain tissue: A team of scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison achieved, using human stem cells, the first3D-printed brain tissue that can grow and form neural connections – an important advance in labgrown tissue and regenerative medicine.
  7. Complete Fruit-Fly brain connectome mapped: The FlyWire Consortium, an international team of scientists led by researchers at Princeton University, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the University of Cambridge, published a wiring diagram of an adult Drosophila brain with 140,000 neurons and over 50 million synapses – the largest and the most complex connectome to date.
  8. AI–driven advances in protein and enzyme design: John Jumper and Demis Hassabis were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry for developing AlphaFold Google’s DeepMind), a groundbreaking AI system that predicts the 3D structure of proteins from their amino acid sequence. David Baker was also co-awarded for his work on computational protein design. Other AI models enabled the design of enzymes that degrade industrial pollutants and accelerate drug discovery.
  9. mRNA lung-cancer vaccine enters trials: The German biotechnology firm BioNTech developed an mRNA lung cancer vaccine, known as BNT116, which is currently in its first human trials across seven countries. The vaccine utilizes messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, similar to that used in COVID-19 vaccines, to instruct the immune system to identify and target non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) cells.
  10. Latest Development in CRISPR: CRISPR is a revolutionary genome editing technology adapted from a natural bacterial defence system. Recent developments in CRISPR focus on enhancing precision with tools like base and prime editors, which allow for nucleotide-level changes without double-stranded breaks, and expanding editing capabilities through the CRISPR-fusion system.
